Step Five ...

Yellow 'trim' on kimono ... Some of these impressions are on fairly small areas, and difficult to see in this small-scale reproduction, so we need a close-up view I think.

Couple of things to note here ... one is that we are getting areas of overprinting to create additional colours; the greenish colour bordering the yellow stripe is a combination of the yellow and the neighbouring blue/green.

Another is the 'ita-bokashi' (block gradation) present in the 'wave' area. The white areas are places where the block is carved away, but the carving is not done with clean sharp cuts. Instead the knife is held at a very low angle, and used in a sort of 'shaving' motion. This leaves the 'fuzzy' edge on the wood at that point, resulting in the uneven edge to the colour.
