Winter Scene (from 'Four Seasons)

Colour woodcut, c.1900

It's not so much the design that attracts me to this one, but the incredible three dimensional effect of the embossings in the soft and thick paper. It's funny though, if I like such effects so much, then why am I always so ready to argue that woodblock prints should be 'flat', and any attempt to produce 'realistic' images by gradations and shading goes against the nature of the medium?
